STEAM & STEM Activities

  • CAD-CAM group: This activity involves independent learning of how to use AUTOCAD. Projects include building/printing a small car chassis and wheels then adding a small carbon dioxide gas cartridge to provide propulsion along a race track. Open mainly to pupils interesting in Engineering, Architecture or Physics. 

  • Physics Olympiad:  This involves challenging Physics problems that require creative thinking and application of Physics principles to a variety of situations. The Physics Olympiad also has an experimental project that requires pupils to plan and execute an experiment to determine the Physics behind an interesting situation e.g. last year’s project was to determine the Physics behind a rattleback toy.  

  • Robotics:  This activity involves using Lego and through the use of sensors and motors, creations are brought to life. Pupils have fun building their very own robot using Lego Mindstorm sets, learning how to work as a team, and developing their technical skills.  

  • CREST: An opportunity for Creativity in STEM. Pupils plan, research, carry out and present an investigation of their choice. They can work towards a BSA CREST Award or Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and this encourages pupils to improve their independence and problem-solving skills. In a recent example, a pupil developed a method for making biodegradable plastics from materials readily available in developing countries 

  • STEAM: An opportunity to explore the links between these subjects, perhaps through producing Art inspired by STEM; using computer software to manipulate images, or model experiments; using STEM to create Art; studying the Maths in Art, wherever we find points of symbiosis! 

  • Maths and Computing Society: Run by pupils, this has previously included sessions on cryptography and strategy games 

  • Animation: A chance to explore the world of animation through some simple apps. No experience necessary, pupils work together to create some short movies by the end of the term. 

  • Project Euler: An online Maths and computer programming course. Project Euler exists to encourage, challenge, and develop the skills and enjoyment of anyone with an interest in the fascinating world of mathematics. It provides a series of challenging mathematical and computer programming problems that require more than just mathematical insights to solve. Participants learn problem-solving and programming skills together through an extremely addictive set of puzzles. 

  • Things to Make and Do in the Fourth Dimension: Learn how to: Cut pizzas in new and fairer ways; fit a $5 coin through an impossibly small hole; make a perfect regular pentagon by knotting a piece of paper; tie your shoes faster than ever before, saving literally seconds of your life; make a working computer out of dominoes… and lots more!

  • Visions of Numberland: A Colouring Journey Through the Mysteries of Maths: A combination of Maths and Art. For those who ponder the most intriguing questions in maths, the realm of numbers is not only visual but also beautiful. What does a sphere look like in four dimensions? How can a knight on a chessboard visit every square? And can a five-sided tile cover an infinite floor? We unlock the secrets of an intellectual quest that has been underway for three thousand years - but no maths knowledge is required. Anyone can be an artist in Numberland! 

  • Creative Coding/Computing (Prep School): Creative Coding is the art of blending human ideas and digital tools to increase our power. You will find out what it is to be computer programmers a.k.a. Wizards of the future. This is the only ECA where sometimes you will do focused activities (e.g. coding different types of basic video games like racing, platform, launching, etc., or designing displays for aGreener IT in the School or using computers to tell fun and interactive stories) whilst at other times you will simply be creative and have a go and explore any interesting new App out there! The Creative Coding ECA develops computational and critical thinking skills. Participants will learn how to code and shown how to create, not simply use, new technologies. 

  • The Apps Lab (Prep School): The Apps Lab ECA introduces the foundation concepts of computer programming, which unlocks the ability to make rich, interactive apps. This ECA uses JavaScript as the programming language, and App Lab as the programming environment to build apps, but the concepts learned in these lessons span all programming languages and tools. 

  • Computer Programming Club (Senior School): The CPC is a community for aspiring programmers to learn the basics of coding, collaborate with like-minded people, investigate problems and provide creative solutions to these problems.
