Celebration of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the Music Department staged an ensembles concert which included all thirteen songs from the record. The concert primarily showcased the musical talent of students in Years 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, but also featured several students from the Pre-Prep School and Years 11, 12 and 13. A variety of ensembles took part in the event and particular highlights included the famous With a Little Help from My Friends from the Year 9 Soul Band and Years 3 to 5 Choir, a Bossa Nova arrangement of When I’m Sixty-Four from the Jazz Band and the Indian music inspired Within You Without You from the Pop Orchestra. In between each song, a selection of actors from Year 9 wove a humorous narrative through the performance, in a script written by Michael Reid (Y13, Peel). Furthermore, an array of visual art, produced by students in the Extreme Doodling ECA, was projected above the musicians. It was a fantastic evening of artistic collaboration from many students and departments and it ended with a celebratory encore during which all the performers gathered on stage for a rendition of All You Need is Love. The Beatles’ Sgt.
