New Head Appointed for Harrow International School Hong Kong

The Board of Harrow International School Hong Kong is delighted to announce the appointment of Ann Haydon as the School’s new Head from 1 August 2017.

Ann has been appointed following a rigorous recruitment process that attracted Heads from some of the best schools in the world. She succeeds Mel Mrowiec, the School’s Founding Head, who will be retiring after an outstandingly successful five founding years in Hong Kong, and a distinguished contribution to the Harrow family over nearly 30 years.

Ann read Geography and Economics at the University of Surrey and gained a PGCE from the University of Nottingham, before taking up her first teaching post. In more recent years, Ann gained the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) from the National College of School Leadership in 2007.

Ann will be joining Harrow International School Hong Kong from Surbiton High School, the founding school of the United Learning Group, where she has served as Principal since January 2008. Under Ann’s leadership, Surbiton has developed into one of the UK’s leading schools. She has driven the academic and all-round achievement of the School, gaining national recognition for its approach to learning and outstanding co-curricular provision. Aspirations are high for Surbiton High’s 1500 pupils aged 4-18 years, and most move on to their preferred choice of university in the UK or abroad, including Oxford and Cambridge.

Ann led Surbiton High to be “Senior Leadership Team of the Year” in 2012, and “Local Governing Body of the Year” in 2013 at the Independent School Awards. In 2015, the School was rated by the Independent Schools’ Inspectorate as ‘excellent’ in every aspect, with pupils’ achievement being rated as ‘exceptional’. She is a regular contributor to education publications and has spoken at numerous Educational Conferences and Festivals.  “Ann currently sits on the national Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC) Sports Committee and is Secretary of the HMC London Division.

On her appointment, Ann said: “I am very excited to be taking up the Headship at Harrow International School Hong Kong, and am keen to work with all members of the community to build on the strengths of the School, to secure its position as one of the leading co-educational schools in the world. I look forward to joining the Harrow family of schools and to meeting parents, pupils and staff.”

Jack So, Chairman of the Board of Governors said: “As Governors, we are delighted to have appointed Ann Haydon as the new Head of Harrow International School, Hong Kong. We believe we have found an inspiring leader who brings a proven track record of strong academic and pastoral leadership, gained in some of the best schools in the UK. We are confident that she will uphold and enhance Harrow’s proud tradition of excellence across all areas of school life, ensuring that pupils and staff achieve their highest potential.”
